SI Leaders describe this role as a unique and valuable leadership position that helps students successfully complete their academic goals. It  provides them with professional development opportunities to build relationships with faculty, enhance group facilitation and presentation skills, and reinforce course content. SI Leaders feel that these skills and experiences are great resume boosters and impressive experiences to share with employers in interviews.

Our SI Leaders are committed to supporting students in historically difficult courses by promoting the goals of academic success and preparedness in conjunction with DePaul University's goal of educating students to be lifelong learners.

What does an SI Leader do?

SI Leaders facilitate guided study sessions for students in SI-supported courses, helping students achieve greater classroom engagement and academic performance. In addition to leading the sessions, SI Leaders can expect to do the following:

  • Attend all lectures for the course they are supporting and serve as a model student
  • Plan and conduct three hours of collaborative study sessions weekly
  • Promote SI Sessions to students in class and through email
  • Collect valuable attendance and direct student learning data for continued analysis of SI effectiveness
  • Meet with fellow SI Leaders weekly to discuss, troubleshoot, and improve session facilitation skills
  • Regularly meet with supervisors and assigned professor(s)
  • Complete New Leader Training in addition to quarterly SI Leader Training

It is important to remember that SI Leaders are not tutors or teaching assistants. They utilize active learning techniques to facilitate review sessions that promote further understanding of the material; they do not grade, prepare exams/quizzes, or re-lecture course material.

What are the qualifications to be an SI Leader?

In order to apply to be a leader, you must have a history of academic success in the course you wish to support and a minimum GPA of 3.0. All applicants must meet the enrollment requirements to be eligible to work on campus.

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Basic understanding of group facilitation techniques
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Demonstrates agility and adaptability

When and where do SI Leaders work?

The hours for this position will vary, but SI Leaders can expect to work 10-15 hours per week depending on the course they support. SI sessions are held in Richardson Library (Lincoln Park Campus), in the DePaul Center (Loop Campus), or virtually via Zoom. SI Leaders intentionally choose their session schedule and location based on their own availability as well as the needs of their students. SI Leaders may return for future quarters pending position availability, satisfactory performance, and class schedule flexibility.

How much are SI Leaders paid?

Leaders are paid at a rate of $16.25/hour. Payments are dispersed bi-weekly throughout the quarter. The position also qualifies for the University Internship Program (UIP) credit. If you are interested, the UIP team is available to walk you through the enrollment process and answer any questions you may have.

What does an SI Mentor do?

SI Mentors are committed to promoting active and collaborative learning among students through the support of SI Leaders. SI maintains that training leaders and mentors to assist students in historically difficult courses is the most effective means of achieving the goals of academic success and preparedness in conjunction with DePaul University's goal of educating students to be lifelong learners.

SI Mentors report to the Program Coordinator and the Assistant Director of Student Learning.

In addition to fulfilling their SI Leader responsibilities, SI Mentors assist with the following:

SI Leader Training and Development

  • Serve as a resource for new and returning SI Leaders
  • Observe SI sessions and offer feedback for improved performance
  • Serve as a liaison between SI Leaders and SI program administrators
  • Collaborate with fellow mentors, the Program Coordinator, and the Assistant Director to develop new ways to improve the SI program

Meetings

  • Plan and facilitate meaningful weekly team meetings with assigned mentees to develop lesson plans, strategize for increased session attendance, and troubleshoot any difficulties SI Leaders are encountering
  • Meet biweekly with fellow mentors and the SI Program Coordinator to plan for team meetings and develop ways to improve the SI program

What are the qualifications to be an SI Mentor?

In order to apply to be a SI Mentor, you must have performed successfully as an SI Leader for at least one quarter. All applicants must meet the enrollment requirements to be eligible to work on campus.

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Solid understanding of group facilitation techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Demonstrates agility and adaptability
  • Availability to accommodate weekly team meetings and biweekly mentor meetings in schedule

When and where do SI Mentors work?

The hours for this position may vary, but you can expect to work 16 hours per quarter in addition to your 10-15 hours per week as an SI Leader. SI Mentors intentionally choose their meeting schedule and location based on their availability as well as the needs of their mentees. Meetings are held in the Lincoln Park or Loop campus or virtually via Zoom. SI Mentors may return as a mentor in future quarters pending position availability, satisfactory performance, and schedule flexibility. 

How much are SI Mentors paid?

Mentors are paid a rate of $17.25/hour for mentor responsibilities only. This is added to the bi-weekly paynent dispersions for the SI Leader hours worked throughout the quarter. The position also qualifies for University Internship Program (UIP) credit. If you are interested, the UIP team is available to walk you through the enrollment process and answer any questions you may have.

How do I apply?

Each quarter current SI Leaders are asked about their interest in becoming an SI Mentor. We recruit new mentors when a current mentor is no longer able to fullfill their position. Open positions are typically announced between mid-quarter and the start of the next quarter.

What does an SI Leader do during Summer Sessions and Winter Intersession?

Supplemental Instruction partners with the First Year Academic Success Program (FYAS) to provide SI Leaders who facilitate guided study sessions for students in prerequisite courses during Summer Sessions and Winter Intercession, helping students achieve greater classroom engagement and academic performance. 

The mission of FYAS is to serve students who show the potential to succeed in college but need additional support, provide a solid academic foundation for success in college, and enable students to start college with necessary preparation in math and writing. All students participating in FYAS are required to attend at least one SI Session each week.

FYAS SI Leaders can expect to do the following on a weekly basis:

  • Attend and/or watch all lectures for the course they are supporting and serve as a model student
  • Plan and conduct collaborative study sessions weekly based on a poll the program will send to students before the start of FYAS
  • Provide tutoring ad hoc (as students sign up to meet)
  • Communicate with course students in class and through Slack, email, D2L, etc.
  • Meet with SI Leader team weekly
  • Regularly meet with supervisors and assigned professor(s)
  • Complete FYAS SI Leader Training
  • During Summer Sessions, attend the Success Series with students weekly

It is important to remember that SI Leaders utilize active learning techniques to facilitate review sessions that promote further understanding of the material; they do not grade, prepare exams/quizzes, or re-lecture course material.

What are the qualifications to be a FYAS SI Leader?

In order to apply to be a leader, you must have a history of academic success in the course you wish to support and a minimum GPA of 3.3. The SI Leader must be available to attend all lectures and facilitate SI and tutoring sessions between 9am and 8pm CST. If you feel you be unable to maintain your availability throughout the summer or winter intercession dates, we ask that you do not apply – FYAS sessions occur in a short amount of time and there is no opportunity to reschedule. It is imperative that there are no SI Leader absences. All applicants must be eligible for student employment. If you are graduating this quarter, you are eligible to work until the end of this upcoming break.

When and where do FYAS SI Leaders work?

In addition to attending lectures, FYAS SI leaders will also be expected to work additional hour each week for independently scheduled session preparation, material submission, and professor/student communication. SI sessions are held in the Lincoln Park Campus, Loop Campus, or virtually via Zoom, depending on class location. SI Leaders may return for future quarters pending position availability, satisfactory performance, and class schedule flexibility.

How much are SI Leaders paid?

Leaders receive a stipend of $1,225 per course. They receive an additional $16.25/hour of tutoring responsibilities; SI Leaders will report these house in Bluesky and hour logs. SI Leaders may show interest in supporting more than one course. The position also qualifies for University Internship Program (UIP) credit. If you are interested, the UIP team is available to walk you through the enrollment process and answer any questions you may have.

How do I apply?

For a brief period of time, current SI Leaders will be given priority to apply for open positions. Interviews may be required depending on the number of interested SI Leaders. Remaining positions will then be added to the Campus Job Board. The Campus Job Board also has detailed position descriptions and application instructions. It is possiible for leaders to support multiple courses pending position availability. Open positions are typically posted between mid-quarter and the start of the next quarter so keep checking! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.
